Top Shade Trees for Yards
Red Sunset Maple
(Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset')
Most Popular and Best Overall Performer
This is our number one recommended shade tree. It's fast-growing and holds its form beautifully, with brilliant red-orange fall color. It grows 40 to 50 feet tall with a 25 to 35 foot spread. Excellent cold hardiness and strong branching, along with real pest resistance, make it ideal for front yards, backyards, and street plantings.
Autumn Blaze Maple
(Acer x freemanii 'Jeffersred')
Best for Tough Soil and New Construction
A hybrid of red and silver maple, Autumn Blaze handles clay and compaction, and shrugs off drought like a champ. It grows 40 to 55 feet tall with fast growth and bright red fall color. The oval canopy is low-maintenance and widely adaptable.
Sun Valley Maple
(Acer rubrum 'Sun Valley')
Great for Small Yards and Tight Spaces
Compact and upright, Sun Valley grows 20 to 35 feet tall and stays narrow, which is perfect for small front yards or tight backyards. It's seedless, with brilliant red fall color and a dense, symmetrical form. Hardy and low-maintenance.
Reliable Oaks for Long-Term Value and Shade
Swamp White Oak
(Quercus bicolor)
Underrated Favorite for Yards and Community Impact
Our favorite tree to plant. We've seen more than 20 feet of growth in just a few years. It has a broad, rounded form with silver-backed leaves and bronze fall color. It thrives in wet or compacted soils and offers incredible long-term ecological benefit.
Sun Valley Maple

Great for Small Yards and Tight Spaces
Compact and upright, Sun Valley grows 20 to 35 feet tall and stays narrow, which is perfect for small front yards or tight backyards. It's seedless, with brilliant red fall color and a dense, symmetrical form. Hardy and low-maintenance.
Privacy Trees
Bracken's Brown Beauty Magnolia
(Magnolia grandiflora 'Bracken's Brown Beauty')
Evergreen and Premium Screening
A dense evergreen with a stunning leaf contrast, glossy green tops over rusty brown undersides. It grows 30 to 50 feet tall in a narrow shape that's perfect for screening decks or blocking views, and it offers cold hardiness and fragrant white blooms. A gorgeous alternative to typical privacy trees.
Eastern Red Cedar
(Juniperus virginiana)
Most Reliable Privacy Tree
A fast-growing native evergreen with a growth rate of more than 2 feet a year. Hardy and low-maintenance, it thrives where other evergreens fail. We've planted over 500 of them, and only lost one. Great for privacy and windbreaks, and it works well as a dust screen. Ideal when shaped like a Christmas tree.
Ornamental Trees
Flame Thrower Redbud
(Cercis canadensis 'Flame Thrower')
Showstopper Foliage Tree
Tri-color foliage that stuns, with red and burgundy tones brushed with gold on a compact tree. Its rounded shape is excellent for accent planting near homes, and it prefers protection from full afternoon sun.
Eastern Redbud
(Cercis canadensis)
Classic Native and Full-Sun Friendly
Rosy-pink spring blooms and heart-shaped foliage that turns yellow in fall. Great for sunny to partially shaded yards. A tough, adaptable native ornamental.
Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry
(Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance')
Edible and Four-Season Native
A small multi-stem tree with white spring blooms, edible summer berries, red-orange fall color, and attractive bark. It reaches 15 to 25 feet tall. Native and bird-friendly, and great for concealment or accent plantings.

(Malus 'Sugar Tyme')
White Flowers and Winter Fruit
A massive white flower display in spring, and bright red fruit that persists into winter. Compact at 15 to 20 feet tall, with strong disease resistance and year-round appeal.
Prairie Fire Crabapple
(Malus 'Prairie Fire')
Red Flowers Option
Same size and toughness as Sugar Tyme, but with vivid pink-red blooms. It has red-tinged new growth and orange fall foliage, with bright fruit.
